Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
